Sergeant Eugene R. Batenhorst was cited for meritorious achievement in Korea February 1953.  Batenhorst operated his Caterpillar on abrupt slopes of Heartbreak Ridge under direct observation of the enemy, at times under hostile fire.

His dexterity in the use of his Caterpillar on the precipitous mountainside, his determined efforts to carve the road through sections of solid rock, were important contributions to the accomplishment of the unit’s mission.  Eugene is now retired from Dairy farming, and lives with his wife Rita, west of Stuart, Nebraska.
